Please include instructions for how to apply.: The Senior Manager, Public Access oversees access and outreach to the Academy Film Archive’s collection under the supervision of the Archive’s Director. Primary duties include working across Academy departments to deliver content and information for internal and external use, including working with the Academy’s web team, production staff of the Oscars, managing licensing requests, overseeing loan requests, overseeing viewing appointments, and serving as the public face in the Archive’s outreach efforts.
You will serve an integral and strategic role in ensuring that the policies and activities of the Archive meet the needs of the Academy’s missions and its stakeholders, including internal and external users, members, and the general public. In addition, you will play a role in the activities of the Cultural Equity and Inclusion Project (CEIP) which is part of the Archive’s efforts to help identify and uncover the social, gender, ethnic, accessibility, and cultural gaps of more than 100 years of film preservation and collecting, helping to foster a more inclusive American film history from multiple perspectives.
• Collaborate with the Archive’s Director to implement access-based policies and activities.
• Respond to access requests for Academy programs and its digital platforms, advise on content and copyright, and oversee the delivery of material as requested.
• Manage and oversee loan requests and viewing appointments.
• Facilitate licensing requests, including conducting research, coordinating viewing appointments, serving as intermediary between collection stakeholders and licensees, and overseeing the delivery of content.
• Interface with the Cultural Equity and Inclusion Project by scheduling meetings with core team of staff, facilitating the work of the Cataloging Working Group and coordinating grant application drafts and all supplementary material.
• Curate moving images for the Public Access Projection space and the monitor in the Margaret Herrick Library Lobby.
• Conduct outreach to the Archive’s external users, including attending conferences, presenting and participating in panels, and generating outreach material for distribution.
• Oversee press releases, web text, and printed material when relating to Archival content.
• Manage Archive acknowledgement in a consistent and favorable manner for co-presentations, in licensing of Archive content, in print loans, and in academic publications.
• Oversee writing and publishing of the Archive’s web content, including collection profiles and web blogs.
• Oversee creation and archiving of Access produced content, including Academy program material, moving images on the web, and presentations produced for Archive staff.
• Work with Cataloging, Preservation, and the Academy’s Digital Management Services department to support policy decisions that affect access to the Archive’s collection.
• Consult and work with the Academy’s development staff for fundraising events, grant proposals, outward facing tours, and published content as it relates to the Archive.
• Supervise and train staff as needed, including department interns and Public Access staff.
• Serve as the Archive’s subject matter expert on cross-departmental projects.
• Work with Cataloging, Preservation, and DMS to support policy decisions that affect access to the Archive’s collection.
• Serve as a liaison with other Academy departments (including the upcoming Academy Museum of Motion Pictures) and represent the Archive’s collections at interdepartmental meetings.
• Manage the Public Access department staff, setting goals, providing guidance, and performing employee reviews.
• Oversee tours to educational groups and Academy stakeholders as needed to help educate on archival practice and Archive activities.
• Serve as a secondary contact for all communications-based requests for content from the archive under the direction of the Archive’s Director.
• Bachelor’s degree in Library Information Science, Museum Studies, Cinema and Media Studies, or related discipline required. Masters or equivalent preferred.
• 5+ years of experience working in an archival setting, including working collaboratively with a team and motivating staff.
• Knowledge of archival theory and best practices.
• Extensive knowledge of motion picture history.
• A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including demonstrated knowledge and a vested interest in an underrepresented community’s role in the history of film production and content.
• Experience with multimedia archives and archival content management systems.
• High level of computer expertise and experience with Word, Excel, database systems and Web-based data entry procedures. Experience with library and/or archival databases preferred.
• Strong project management and planning skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while staying organized and meeting competing deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills. Bilingual/multilingual is a plus.
• Must be detail orientated with excellent research, writing and proofreading skills.
• Flexibility with the ability to troubleshoot while maintaining a cool head and pleasant demeanor.
• Ability to exercise critical judgement and handle confidential information with discretion.
• An inherent curiosity and a passion for learning with an eye for continuous improvement of work processes.
• Use of personal automobile may be needed. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Availability to work some nights and weekends on short notice.
