Job Description (if URL to posting not available). Please include instructions for how to apply.: The Albany Institute of History & Art, a museum and research library with a mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the art, history, and culture of the Upper Hudson Valley of New York, is seeking a permanent, full-time archivist/librarian.
The Institute’s library contains significant holdings of manuscript collections, photographs, books, maps, and other special collections that relate to and document the Upper Hudson Valley. These collections are available to researchers, students, and the general public during the library’s open hours and by pre-scheduled appointments and are also used and referenced by Albany Institute staff for exhibitions and collections research and documentation.
The archivist/librarian will be responsible for
accessioning, processing, and housing special collections (about 40% of time)
assisting on-site researchers and answering queries from remote researchers. This includes scheduling researcher appointments, locating and pulling collections from storage, suggesting collections for researchers, conveying information about collections to remote researchers, and arranging for digitization and rights and reproduction requests (about 30% of time).
other duties include overseeing a dedicated core of volunteers, assisting curatorial staff with exhibition research, seeking and assisting with the writing of grants, augmenting the Institute’s digital collections database, preparing news articles for the Institute’s bulletin and website, and other activities (about 30% of time).
The candidate should be equally comfortable interacting with groups, including volunteers, collection donors, trustees, researchers, and staff, and working alone on collections processing and organization projects. The candidate will have strong communication and writing skills, must be able to multitask, and be organized.
The archivist/librarian is part of the collections and exhibitions department and will report directly to the chief curator. This position is the only paid staff member in the library, but the archivist/librarian will be joining an institution-wide staff of fifteen full-time members, and all departments work closely together in a collaborative environment.
The ideal candidate will have an MLIS degree, or equivalent, and should have three to five years experience at a research library where duties included processing special collections as well as reference responsibilities. The candidate will have a thorough knowledge of best practices for archives and libraries.
The salary for this position is $40,000-45,000, plus a full benefits package.
Candidates must submit cover letter, resume or curriculum vita, writing sample, and three references by email to Douglas McCombs, Chief Curator, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline is May 10, 2021.
