Job Description (if URL to posting not available). Please include instructions for how to apply.: Introduction:
The Loretto Heritage Center Museum and Archives, the repository for the 210-year history of the Sisters of Loretto, is seeking an archives intern for Summer 2022. The Summer 2022 internship will be an 8-week program June-July (dates flexible) with a M-F 30-40 hr work week. The intern will work mainly with our Post Vatican II Mission Papers, and assist in migrating museum objects to our new collections space.

Working under the supervision of the Heritage Center Director and the Associate Archivist, the archives intern will select a Post Vatican II Mission collection to process. The collection selection will be based on the individual’s background knowledge of the subject, the frequency of requests from the collection, and will be of a size and scope that can feasibly be completed during the eight weeks. Processing will include physical organization, description, inputting information into our content management system (CMS), the digitization of photographs, and coding metadata in our digital asset management system (DAMS).

The archives intern will also work to organize our digital records. Using both the physical records and the digital files, the archives intern will cross-reference and identify digital archival content and separate it from scans and other non-archival materials mixed into the digital files.

Additionally, working under the supervision of the Heritage Center Director and the Curator, the archives intern will assist in the migration of three-dimensional objects to newly created museum collection storage. This process will primarily focus on rehousing large textiles on rolled storage tubes and smaller textiles in museum cabinet drawers. Framed objects, boxed objects, and free-standing shelved objects will also be rehoused and moved during this project. Updating artifact collections records in our CMS will also be a part of the intern’s duties.

Job Duties:
• Processing one Post Vatican II Mission collection, including CMS and DAMS entry.
• Rehousing materials, where appropriate, during processing.
• Assessing digital materials, including organization of born digital materials.
• Rehousing museum objects and assisting the Curator with the move.
• Creation of social media content showcasing the collections.

Qualifications:
• Current or recent graduate student in Library and Information Science, Public History, or related field with a concentration or strong focus on archives.
• Interest in women’s, United States, religious, and 19th-20th century history.
• Must be fully vaccinated and receive a negative PCR test within 72 hours of arriving on the Motherhouse campus.

Location:
The Loretto Heritage Center Archives and Museum is located on the grounds of the Loretto Motherhouse in rural Kentucky (40049). The Motherhouse is approximately 1 hour from Louisville, KY and 1.5 hours from Lexington, KY. Having a car is strongly recommended, as stores and other amenities are not within walking distance and there is no public transportation. Ride sharing is not currently available in the surrounding area. The Motherhouse itself sits on approximately 800 acres of farmland, wooded areas, and natural habitat. In addition to the Heritage Center, the campus includes two retreat centers, the Infirmary, and a fully operational farm. It is home to around 70 Loretto Community members (both Sisters and Co-Members).

The archives intern will be provided private housing on campus for the duration of their internship. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, certain areas of campus will be off limits. The current regulations will be provided at the start of the internship. The intern will be required to provide their own food, linens, laundry supplies, and toiletries.

Job Requirements and Stipend:
This is an unpaid internship requiring 30-40 hrs/wk Monday-Friday for 8 weeks June-July 2022. Start and end dates are flexible based on the candidate’s schedule. In addition to housing, a travel and board stipend of up to $3,000 will be provided. The stipend amount will be based off of school requirements if applicable.
