Please include instructions for how to apply.: The Research and Exhibitions department is seeking an Archives Intern, who will work closely with the Research Assistant and Director of Research. The Archives Intern will focus on special projects within the internal archives. The gallery is in the process of consolidating and reorganizing our archives, which are stored offsite, and is looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented Archives Intern to assist with moving and cataloging these items. Qualified candidates for this position should be familiar with handling ephemera, processing collections, and developing finding aids. Some knowledge of and interest in twentieth-century and contemporary art is preferred.
Primary responsibilities include:
Maintenance to existing collections
Rehousing material when needed, ensuring that material is in the best possible storage enclosure
Incorporating existing document boxes into the offsite storage space
Consolidating existing collections in a spatially efficient, yet responsible manner
Sorting through onsite material and processing material appropriately for inclusion in offsite storage
Offsite Storage development
Appraising the current collection holdings
Developing a finding aid for internal use
Labeling and documenting shelf locations
Artist Specific Project
Designating an area within the offsite collection, specific to a single artist, and creating an independent finding aid for their material
The ideal candidate should be
Enrolled in a current MLIS or accredited Archives program
Familiar with ArchivesSpace or comparable information software
Able to lift up to 30 pounds
There are two positions available. Internship will be 2-4 days/week, flexible, Monday – Friday, 10am-6pm. Internship is paid at NYC minimum wage of $15/hour. Summer internship runs from the end of May through the beginning of August. Only qualified candidates will be contacted. Absolutely no calls or walk-ins please.
