The People’s Media Record (PMR) was first created as the repository and archive for the Movement Alliance Project (then named Media Mobilizing Project). PMR remains a fiscally sponsored project of the Movement Alliance Project. The Record’s initial collection consists of thousands of hours of video media gathered through community organizing and advocacy work in Philadelphia between 2005-2017. Through assessment, training, and collaboration, People’s Media Record works to support local community institutions facing the challenge of preserving audiovisual materials.

The Opportunity

The People’s Media Record is preparing for its next phase as archive and repository for community media in Philadelphia. PMR is seeking a leader to guide and grow the Record through the next phase of organizational development while ensuring the Record remains accountable to the source communities and activist history of the collected material.

The Director of the People’s Media Record will provide overall vision, leadership, and management, guide the Record’s long-term strategic direction, and set strategic priorities. The Director will ensure the Record’s financial health, lead fundraising and financial management, develop and maintain external relationships and partnerships, and manage and supervise personnel.

Job Functions
Leads the development of the People’s Media Record as a repository for community media in Philadelphia and resource for community organizations to meet audiovisual preservation needs
Fundraises for ongoing support of the Record, and works to ensure the sustainability of the Record
Determines the future staffing needs of the Record and supervises staff and volunteers, including current Collections Assessment Associate
Responds to and cultivates relationships with current Community Advisory Board, manages advisory board going forward
Works with existing stakeholders, programming, and PMR staff to develop vision and roadmap forward for PMR
Oversees the continued implementation and maintenance of metadata and asset management policies and procedures
Oversees the ongoing maintenance of the PMR Digital Asset Management (DAM) system, storage systems, and internal staff systems
Facilitates the ongoing creation and documentation of policies and procedures for the People’s Media Record
Oversees archival processing for PMR, including acquisitions, curation, collections management, etc
Promotes PMR through online exhibits, presentations, publications, workshops, social media, and other outreach activities
Cultivates relationships with other community archives in Philadelphia and other parts of the world
Actively seeks out opportunities for professional growth

Key Qualifications
Knowledge and connection working with and within local Philadelphia communities, especially those reflected in the content in the Record
Substantial experience with digital archival collections, particularly collections with strong community involvement and participation
Demonstrated ability to manage a program or team
Experience with fundraising for non-profit organizations, particularly through foundation and individual support
Demonstrated leadership abilities, including independent problem solving, written and verbal communication, and ability to build lasting professional relationships
Experience building and maintaining cross-community connections and initiatives
Experience with metadata creation, development, and management, particularly of audiovisual materials
Experience with digital asset management systems such as Avalon and content management systems such as WordPress
Master’s Degree in Library Science, Information Science, Archival Management or similar concentration, or significant equivalent experience working in audiovisual archives

Bonus Qualifications
Experience with media production, particularly audio/visual material
Proficiency in one or more programming languages, particularly Python, and HTML / CSS
