The Woodman Family Foundation stewards the artwork and legacies of three artists: Betty Woodman (1930 – 2018), sculptor and ceramicist; Francesca Woodman (1958 – 1981), photographer; and George Woodman (1932 – 2017), painter and photographer. We maintain and oversee a substantial collection of artworks by each artist from all periods and media, organize museum and gallery exhibitions and publications of their work, and facilitate the placement of their works in public collections. We are in the process of cataloguing the extensive archives of each of the artists to create a study center open to scholars and curators, and we make grants to support the arts.
The Woodman Family Foundation seeks an experienced Archivist on a full-time, year-long contract to complete the processing of a substantial portion of the archives of all three artists and prepare the Foundation to begin accepting requests and hosting researchers. Once the processing phase is complete, the position will transition to a permanent part-time position focused on facilitating research requests, maintaining databases, managing special projects and overseeing interns.
The archives contain a range of materials related to all three artists’ work and lives, including personal and professional correspondence, journals, published and unpublished writings, notes, sketches, analogue and digital personal photographs, artwork documentation images, digital materials, studio materials and more. The archivist will be responsible for completing the processing and rehousing of the collection according to industry standards; creating and updating container lists and finding aids; implementing systems for digitizing, organizing and managing archival images and other materials; establishing an archives database to integrate with existing artwork and image databases; seeking grants for special projects; overseeing interns; conceptualizing a future study center; managing research requests; liaising with Digital Content / Image Manager on reproduction requests; liaising with Collections Curator and Executive Director on materials for scholars, outside curators, exhibitions, publications, articles, etc. This position reports to the Executive Director, will work closely with our Collections Curator, as well as collaboratively with our small team.
Applicants must have a MLS degree, 5 years of experience, and a proven track record processing and overseeing a similar type of archive for an artist, museum, library or artist endowed foundation; familiarity with best practices and industry standards in archives and the handling of fragile and also potentially sensitive material; ability to lift and move boxes weighing up to 35 pounds; a proactive attitude, showing initiative and working independently when needed to bring projects to fruition in a timely and professional manner; excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with the team to ensure smooth operations; agility, flexibility, and the ability to prioritize and manage time effectively while also meeting shifting deadlines; availability after hours when unexpected deadlines and needs arise; ability to multi-task while giving attention to detail; strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; discretion; proficiency and experience with FileMaker, Google apps and content management systems; and finally, an understanding of and commitment to the mission, goals, and standards of our Foundation and a desire to be an integral, collaborative member of our team.
The Woodman Family Foundation is committed to expanding diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in our field. We recognize that a successful candidate will meet many of the requirements listed on this job description, but may not meet all of them, and we encourage you to apply for this role if you meet many of them. We are an equal opportunity employer and considers all candidates for employment regardless of race, color, sex, age, national origin, creed, disability, marital status, sexual orientation or political affiliation.
