Job Title: Library Archivist
Department: Public Services
Position Reports To: Executive Director
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Full-time 40.0 hours per week
Benefits: Full
Primary Function: To preserve, catalog, and make the library’s special collections and historic archives accessible to the community of New Albany and the public at large.
ORGANIZATION-WIDE EXPECTATIONS
• Follows established Library and personnel policy, procedures and work standards.
• Attends work regularly, on time, and as scheduled.
• Exhibits welcoming, helpful, positive and friendly behavior to all patrons, staff, and guests at all times in all communication formats (verbal and non-verbal).
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Regularly monitors Library communication venues including, but not limited to, employee email, staff bulletin boards, library social media outlets and the shared staff electronic storage locations.
• Participates in meetings, conferences, continuing education, community engagement, and special projects as required by the Floyd County Library or as dictated by professional commitment.
• Addresses, or assists in addressing, issues and concerns related to the safety of Library staff and users as well as the security and maintenance of Library buildings and equipment.
• Actively assisting in the cleanliness and organization of service and work areas to ensure an inviting public environment.
Job Specific Requirements
• Manage arrangement, description, and access tools for archival records, including maps, photographs, oral histories, and family history records
• Manage acquisitions and access of library’s historical collection of non-circulating books, paper files, and microfilm inventories
• Manage and maintain archival databases, finding aids, and inventories
• Provide reference services and internal/external requests related to Indiana History Room and its contents
• Establish policies and procedures for the Indiana History Room
• Manage budgeting and purchase of archival supplies
• Apply for and administer grant funding as it applies to specific need/projects of the Indiana History Room
• Other duties as assigned
Education/Competencies/Experience:
• ALA accredited MLS degree with specialization in archives administration or ACA certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum 3-5 years’ experience working/digitizing archives and special collections
• Experience in providing library reference and basic genealogy assistance
• Knowledge of current archival arrangement and description standards, including CONTENTdm
• Knowledge of computer standards and applications in archives and libraries, including DACS, and digital imaging
• Ability to work independently and manage sensitive material in a confidential and secure manner
• Supervisory experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, attention to detail, excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills
