Description
It is the mission of the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives to provide information access for the citizens, businesses, and agencies of the Commonwealth. To help the state maintain its competitive edge, the department offers comprehensive services which assure that our clientele have access to information resources: virtual, physical and human. As one of 10 state agencies in the country to combine library, archival, and public records programs, the department is uniquely positioned to meet these needs.

We are seeking a charismatic and customer service oriented individual to join our team as an Archivist II. The successful candidate for this position will have experience and knowledge of library services and systems. A passion for information literacy and a dedication to quality customer service is highly preferred. We are seeking a highly analytical individual with excellent organization and planning skills.

This position will be located in the Archival Services Branch and will supervise the staff the Archives Research Room, which provides customers access to public records in the Departments’ collections in addition to offering research and reference assistance for on-site and off-site customers.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Provides research and reference assistance for on-site and off-site customers for the Archives Research Room.
Handles fragile historical records and responds to reference and research requests from a variety of platforms.
Supervises Archives Research Room staff.
Plans, supervises, and carries out appraisal, arrangement, description, and indexing of collections of permanent public records from state and local government agencies.
Prepares and gives 2-4 public presentations per year about the State Archives’ collection and research performed within it.
Compiles monthly statistics and narrative monthly reports.
Performs other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate for this position will have experience with research and reference materials and knowledge of digital information systems and library cataloging tools. A passion for information literacy and a dedication to quality customer service is highly preferred.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in history, library science, public administration, social science or a related field.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three years of professional archival experience in one or more of the following areas: reference, appraisal, description, preservation, or the arrangement of documents.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in archival studies, records management, history, library science, public administration, or related field will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis not to exceed one year.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Professional archival experience in one of the above areas will substitute for the education on a year- for- year basis.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a library setting. Handles records which have dust, mold and potentially unhealthy materials on them.

Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
