Summary of Responsibilities
The IAIA Research Center for Contemporary Native Arts (RCCNA) Metadata Specialist reports to the Director of RCCNA. The Metadata Specialist will work collaboratively with RCCNA and MoCNA staff to create descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata for a variety of digital collection materials to ensure proper delivery to RCCNA patrons. The Metadata Specialist participates in the development of digital projects policies and procedures with other staff in a team environment and provides training and guidance to IAIA Staff and external collection owners in the areas of metadata standards.
The successful candidate will posses the following skills: responsiveness and willingness to work on special projects and assignment; analytical, communication, and training sills, ability to prioritize work to ensure the goals are realized; and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a production-oriented environment with a commitment to professional development and growth.
Essential Position Functions
Demonstrates knowledge of current trends in metadata standards and practices such as Dublin Core and CCO, as well as research, curatorial, and archival practices; Creates original metadata according to industry and local standards and has experience with content management systems; Performs content management systems (Proficio Elements) record maintenance, metadata clean-up, and other similar projects; Effectively uses image processing software such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Audition, Handbrake, and checksum utilities to prepare and maintain digital collections; Supervise 1-2 student workers, interns, or apprentices per semester; Collaborate in the digitization of art and archival materials; Assists with grant writing for digital projects; Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education, Knowledge, and Skills
Bachelor of Arts in museum studies, history, art history, Native American Studies, or a comparable degree with coursework demonstrating an ability to understand the complexities of content management systems.
·Experience:
2+ years of previous experience working in museums, archives, digitization, and metadata creation and management
Demonstrated understanding of the principles that dictate digital collection management, metadata standards, and delivery of digital assets; Demonstrated knowledge of national standards, vocabularies, and best practices including DublinCore, CCO, and MODs; Superior interpersonal, communication and writing skills
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and equity; Strong problem-solving and project management skills, with an ability to be receptive to changing priorities and to manage multiple work processes and projects simultaneously; Ability to maintain a high level of detail and accuracy in management and completion of tasks; Ability to work effectivity in a timely manner on a wide variety of projects concurrently, with concern for the tasks assigned and the goals of the archives.
Preferred:
Graduate degree in library science, museum studies, or related field, with an emphasis in digital object and metadata creation and management AND/OR Graduate degree in history with an emphasis in archives, museums, or public history.
Experience:
2+ years of previous experience working in museums, archives, digitization, and metadata creation and management; 2+ years of proven successful management experience working on projects with part-time staff, student employees, or volunteers; Strong commitment to delivery of digital assets, particularly to working with Indigenous communities; Knowledge of intellectual property and rights management issues related to digital materials; Experience managing digitization projects and born-digital archival content
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Work schedule will be set in agreement with the RCCNA Director.
• Ability to sit for extended periods of times, utilizing a computer workstation.
• Must be able to effectively use all the office equipment listed and not listed in the job description.
• Ability to read and interpret basic to complex data/information/guidelines/ procedures, etc. related administrative support to a large and demanding academic staff.
• Must be able to carry and/or maneuver items weighing up to 25 pounds.
